Background

Local and regional authorities face the challenge of developing and implementing climate adaptation measures that combine economic, environmental and social objectives. A key concern is to create a common understanding of equitable resilience.
The JustREACH project promotes social justice, environmental sustainability and economic development through collaboration between research and practice. It aims to bring about long-term changes in EU climate policy and social transformation.

Implementation

JustREACH promotes dialogue between various stakeholders – including science, politics, civil society, business and citizens – in order to develop transdisciplinary adaptation pathways that pay particular attention to disadvantaged groups.

In five European pilot regions, including Athens, Belfast, Zagreb, the French Basque Country and the western Lake Constance region, the adaptation pathways are being developed in collaboration with local stakeholders. These take into account not only scientific findings, but also the needs of disadvantaged groups. One focus is on co-creation, with city administrations, citizens’ initiatives and local universities being actively involved in the development process. The project team is also developing an AI tool (JustREACH Prism) that provides local authorities with a user-friendly information and decision-making basis for climate adaptation, based on scientifically sound and practice-oriented solutions. In addition, knowledge is being imparted to local authorities through ‘social learning videos’ and a ‘transformation boot camp’.
