Biodiversity Criteria in Standards and Quality Labels for the Food Industry

Quality labels and standards badge products or services that match to certain criteria. Therefore they are functioning as an important mark for orientation for all of those, who are working at procurement or quality assurance. Labels and standards being communicated to consumers grant this function of orientation. Nevertheless, only some of those labels and standards include criteria concerning protection of biodiversity, which means that they have not proved a recipe for a better performance in this sector.

The initiative "Integration of Biodiversity Criteria in Standards and Quality Labels for the Food Industry" pursues the target of strengthening preservation of biodiversity. The aim is not to develop independent biodiversity labels, but to integrate existing quality systems and sustainability standards into the current system.
